d Public Space in Britain=2C an exhibition of photographic works by Anna F=
ox=2C Jermaine Francis=2C Sunil Gupta=2C Karen Knorr=2C MacDonaldStrand=2C=
 Sarah Pickering=2C John Stezaker=2C Bettina von Zwehl=2C co-curated in di=
alogue with Christiane Monarchi. Through the intersection of language and=
 the use of public space=2C the exhibition explores photography as a trans=
formative site for action and a declaration of intent - whether political=
=2C cultural=2C or personal.

In Plain Sight: Photography=2C Power and Public Space in Britain - Exhibit=

At its core=2C In Plain Sight is both a reflection on Britain=E2=80=99s ri=
ch photographic landscape and a testament to its profound contributions to=
 social discourse with a particular focus on the last twenty years.

Bringing together the work of eight lens-based artists=2C In Plain Sight o=
pens a dialogue with specific histories of the United Kingdom which contin=
ue to influence visual culture today. The photographs=2C video and sculptu=
ral works included from these UK-based artists oscillate between fiction a=
nd document=2C while conceptually grounded in the experience and existenti=
al analysis of contemporary culture in Britain=2C where it originated and=
 from where it ventures abroad.

The exhibition also resonates with the history of Mat=C3=A8ria itself=2C t=
racing back to the formative years its director=2C Niccol=C3=B2 Fano=2C sp=
ent in the UK during the 2000s. More than a survey=2C this selection is de=
eply personal=2C shaped by the artistic influences and relationships built=
 during that time - most notably=2C the long-standing dialogue with curato=
r and editor Christiane Monarchi=2C with whom Fano has collaborated on mul=
tiple occasions and the ongoing relationship with artists Karen Knorr and=
 Sunil Gupta=2C both featured in the exhibition.

Monarchi=E2=80=99s expertise in photography is extensive; she is the co-di=
rector of HAPAX=2C which publishes a biannual print magazine commissioning=
 new photographic ideas and runs a project space in London. She also found=
ed  Photomonitor=2C which has published over 1=2C400 online features since=
 2011 and has commissioned new writing in partnership with the University=
 for the Creative Arts. A publisher=2C editor=2C curator=2C lecturer=2C an=
d artist mentor=2C Monarchi also serves on the steering committee of Fast=
 Forward: Women in Photography and is a trustee of the Centre for British=
 Photography.

Among the works on view=2C Anna Fox=E2=80=99s Friendly Fire (1989) critiqu=
es the performative rituals of Thatcher-era leisure. Documenting paintball=
 games undertaken by corporate teams and social groups=2C Fox mirrors the=
 absurdities of simulated combat against the backdrop of post-industrial B=
ritain. The work exposes how play and violence=2C spectacle and critique=
=2C coalesce within the social fabric=2C transforming the photographer her=
self into both observer and reluctant participant.

In Jermaine Francis=E2=80=99s A Post Industrial Dreamscape (2024)=2C the a=
rtist presents a filmic and text-based meditation on postcolonial Britain=
 - its racialized identities=2C music cultures=2C and shifting political l=
andscape. Drawing from archival material=2C personal imagery=2C and the ar=
chitecture of deindustrialised Britain - ranging from the 1970s up to 2024=
 -  Francis constructs a visual essay that moves between resistance and re=
flection. The work=E2=80=99s layered soundtrack=2C produced in collaborati=
on with Tony Bontana=2C reclaims rave and club culture as radical spaces o=
f collective expression against the oppressive politics of the 1980s and 1=
990s.

Sunil Gupta=E2=80=99s Trespass (1995) revisits - in three acts - the polit=
ics of visibility through digital photomontage. Created on one of the firs=
t Apple computers=2C the body of work examines questions of belonging=2C s=
exuality=2C and migration across domestic and public contexts. The exhibit=
ed work=2C sourced from Trespass III - set in Essex and described by the a=
rtist as a =E2=80=9Cgateway into England=E2=80=9D - situates queer and dia=
sporic identity within the contested terrain of British multiculturalism.

Karen Knorr=E2=80=99s Country Life (1984) offers a satirical portrayal of=
 Britain=E2=80=99s social hierarchies at the height of Thatcherism. Create=
d in domestic interiors and manicured gardens across London=2C Scotland=2C=
 and Oxfordshire=2C the series parodies the attitudes of the landed gentry=
 through a refined interplay of text and image. By appropriating the still=
 life and landscape genres=2C Knorr maps a terrain where nature and proper=
ty intertwine=2C revealing the persistence of privilege and the slow evolu=
tion of Britain=E2=80=99s class structures.

MacDonaldStrand=E2=80=99s False Flags (ongoing) directly confronts the sym=
bolism of nationalism and the visual language of propaganda. By digitally=
 erasing national flags from photographs of right-wing marches in the UK a=
nd the USA=2C MacDonaldStrand withdraw the legitimising iconography of nat=
ionalism=2C leaving behind stark=2C ambiguous gestures of allegiance. The=
 works=2C originally produced as large-scale printed flags=2C can no longe=
r be shown in full=2C but are presented here folded into ceremonial triang=
ular frames.

Sarah Pickering=E2=80=99s Explosion series (2004=E2=80=932009) documents t=
he staged pyrotechnics used in British police and military training=2C whe=
re controlled blasts are engineered to simulate the shock of real conflict=
=2E Photographed in the English countryside=2C these eruptions of fire=2C sm=
oke=2C and light appear both spectacular and unsettlingly out of place=2C=
 exposing the tension between authentic danger and its fabricated counterp=
art. Pickering=E2=80=99s images reflect on how contemporary culture prepar=
es for=2C aestheticises=2C and consumes violence=2C transforming moments o=
f orchestrated destruction into seductive=2C suspended scenes. Through thi=
s interplay of artifice and spectacle=2C the work explores our mediated re=
lationship to conflict and the systems that rehearse it.

John Stezaker=E2=80=99s exhibited work encapsulates the artist=E2=80=99s l=
ongstanding engagement with the found image and the mechanics of visual pe=
rception. A pivotal figure in British conceptual art=2C Stezaker has=2C si=
nce the 1970s=2C redefined the relationship between photography=2C cinema=
=2C and the unconscious through his precise acts of appropriation and disr=
uption. By cutting=2C splicing=2C and reconfiguring archival images - ofte=
n drawn from film stills=2C postcards=2C and publicity portraits - he reve=
als the latent psychological charge of the photographic fragment. The work=
 on view exemplifies his ability to transform the familiar into the uncann=

Bettina von Zwehl=E2=80=99s Sea of Troubles (2023-2025) turns to the 17th=
 century as a mirror for contemporary instability. Developed during a resi=
dency at the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford=2C the series draws from the era=
=E2=80=99s fascination with natural philosophy=2C tea culture=2C and magic=
al thinking. By painting and pressing used teabags on glass=2C von Zwehl c=
reates delicate=2C light-infused abstractions that echo landscapes in flux=
 - metaphors for both colonial entanglement and the fragile alchemy of cre=
ation.

 in its street facing Vitrine. The curated series of small shows aims to c=
ast a spotlight on digital and on-chain art and is developed in collaborat=
ion with Re:humanism; the pioneering platform led by Daniela Cotimbo=2C de=
dicated to the exploration of the intricate relationship between humanisti=
c and scientific cultures with a special emphasis on the advancements in a=
rtificial intelligence research.

OVERTON WINDOW sets out to explore the possibilities stemming from our rap=
idly evolving symbiotic relationship with technology. The project seeks to=
 champion artists and concepts that illuminate the intersection of art and=
 technology=2C with the overarching goal to harness the disruptive potenti=
al of AI and blockchain technologies=2C paving the way for new artistic pr=
oduction models. Additionally=2C OVERTON WINDOW serves as a catalyst for r=
eimagining cultural production=2C markets and ownership models by providin=
g artists with a platform and a support structure to experiment with the e=
volving technological landscape.

Presented in curated installments=2C OVERTON WINDOW features an open ended=
 dialogue between the public and a selection of local and international ar=
tists.

The common thread of the project is embodied by the concept of new digital=
 mythologies=2C a theme that encloses various manifestations of our relati=
onship with the contemporary. If Chatbots=2C avatars=2C and voice assistan=
ts become new idols=2C digital simulacra embodying new forms of animism=2C=
 renewed forms of digital ritual embrace diverse perspectives and suggest=
 new narratives.

The fourth appointment of OVERTON WINDOW presents=2C for the first time=2C=
 an installation by the Peruvian artist Nicol=C3=A1s Lamas=2C entitled Col=
lective Memory.

The work is conceived as a timeless archaeology: the bronze cast of a Keny=
anthropus platyops skull=E2=80=94an extinct hominid species that lived app=
roximately 3.5 million years ago=E2=80=94and a wasp's nest=2C a fragile re=
mnant of a non-human collective intelligence=2C are fused together and pla=
ced within the structure of a server that evokes contemporary data flows=
=2C digital infrastructures=2C and information networks.

The project unfolds as a reflection that intertwines distant temporalities=
 and heterogeneous cognitive models. On one side stands the "solid brain"=
=2C a stable and specialized architecture present in many living species=
=2C including humans; on the other=2C the "liquid brain"=2C a dynamic=2C d=
istributed=2C and decentralized system characteristic of insects and certa=
in artificial intelligence systems.

Collective Memory challenges the traditional notion of the individual mind=
 and proposes a vision in which intelligence emerges from complex systems=
=E2=80=94biological or artificial=E2=80=94and persists within the entangle=
ment of living and constantly evolving networks. It invites us to transcen=
d dichotomies and to rethink personal and collective experience as a web o=
f relations that brings together different ways of being in the world.

This initiative highlights and supports excellence in emerging visual arts=
 practices.

The Collection Caixa Geral de Dep=C3=B3sitos was created in 1983. As of 20=
06 Culturgest has taken charge of the study=2C management=2C dissemination=
 and conservation of the Collection=E2=80=99s 1=2C900 works of art=2C incl=
uding painting=2C sculpture=2C drawing=2C photography=2C video=2C installa=
tion and engraving.

ships built during that time - most notably=2C the long-standing dialogue=
 with curator and editor Christiane Monarchi=2C with whom Fano has collabo=
rated on multiple occasions and the ongoing relationship with artists Kare=
n Knorr and Sunil Gupta=2C both featured in the exhibition.<br>

Monarchi=E2=80=99s expertise in photography is extensive; she is the co-di=
rector of HAPAX=2C which publishes a biannual print magazine commissioning=
 new photographic ideas and runs a project space in London. She also found=
ed&nbsp; Photomonitor=2C which has published over 1=2C400 online features=
 since 2011 and has commissioned new writing in partnership with the Unive=
rsity for the Creative Arts. A publisher=2C editor=2C curator=2C lecturer=
=2C and artist mentor=2C Monarchi also serves on the steering committee of=
