From 5 September to 20 November=2C the Bukhara Biennial presents Recipes f=
or Broken Hearts=2C featuring Bekhbataar Enkhtur among more than 70 partic=
ipants=2C each developing new projects for the Biennial=E2=80=99s inaugura=
l edition.

The site-specific=2C interdisciplinary gathering will take the form of an=
 expanded multi-sensory feast=2C marking one of Central Asia=E2=80=99s lar=
gest and most diverse cultural initiatives to date.

The event is commissioned by Gayane Umerova=2C Chairperson of the Uzbekist=
an Art and Culture Development Foundation and the first edition is curated=
 by Artistic Director Diana Campbell.

The biennial=E2=80=99s debut edition will feature an interdisciplinary lis=
t of Uzbek=2C Central Asian and international participants=2C who will eac=
h present site-specific artworks and installations alongside a programme o=
f events=2C performances and culinary activations.

Inspired by an ancient Mongolian shamanic healing ritual=2C Bekhbaatar Enk=
htur transforms the entrance of the nineteenth-century Ayojzon caravansera=
i into a symbolic material manifestation of the unseen feelings of Bukhara=
 today. In the Shireg ritual=2C molten pewter is poured into water when a=
 baby cries and cannot sleep=2C revealing the source of hidden fears and a=
llowing the child to rest peacefully. Enkhtur uses this technique=2C which=
 he experienced both as a child and now as a father=2C and pours molten pe=
ter onto canvas=2C which is then embroidered by suzani maker Sanoat Abdura=
ximova - in a collaborative gesture of healing=2C a ritual intended to cle=
anse the ancient city of its fears. In the artist's words: 'This act trans=
forms invisible afflictions into tangible forms - a symbolic purification=
 and a conduit for healing.'

On the occasion of the first San Lorenzo Gallery Night=2C Mat=C3=A8ria ina=
ugurates its new season with the third edition of Luci di via - curated by=
 Giuliana Benassi - and introduces a new Vitrine project under the curator=
ship of Gianni Politi=2C dedicated to emerging artists.


Now in its third edition=2C Luci di via stems from the gallery=E2=80=99s d=
esire to extend its exhibition space along the outer perimeter=2C occupyin=
g the spots once marked by the pub lanterns left behind by the building=E2=
=80=99s former tenant.

Artists are invited by curator Giuliana Benassi to create site-specific in=
stallations=2C reflecting on space=2C light=2C and the sea. The project=E2=
=80=99s title derives from nautical terminology and refers to the lights u=
sed by vessels=2C not to see=2C but to allow others to see the ship=E2=80=
=99s presence. With this subtle metaphor=2C pointing to the desire to sign=
al one=E2=80=99s identity beyond the confines of the gallery=E2=80=99s int=
erior space=2C Mat=C3=A8ria offers a project that engages with public spac=
e in the streets of San Lorenzo.

For this edition=2C Wang Yuxiang (Anhui=2C China=2C 1997) presents a sculp=
tural intervention titled We Have No More Mysteries (Non abbiamo pi=C3=B9=
 misteri)=2C in which light - both artificial and natural - becomes an int=
egral part of the installation. The artist=E2=80=99s research is rooted in=
 the study of the relationships that unfold within the meshes of nature an=
d their simulation=2C drawing from an imaginary that favors the staging of=
 rhetorical figures and layered allusions. The worlds of science and philo=
sophy enter his work as tools for shaping thought. In addition=2C his expe=
rimentation with diverse materials=2C both organic and inorganic=2C leads=
 the artist to incorporate methods of Eastern tradition=2C often reinterpr=
eted in original and unexpected ways.

The works exist both by day and by night=2C engaging with the interplay of=
 natural and artificial light. They embed themselves into the texture of t=
he gallery=E2=80=99s exterior walls=2C blending almost seamlessly into the=
 urban fabric=2C as if they were wild grass.

As per tradition=2C the unveiling of the exterior lights is purposefully s=
cheduled in between exhibitions=2C clearing the interior gallery space for=
 a single=2C key work by the artist commissioned for Luci di via.

* The interior of the gallery will be open to public viewing until October=
 4=2C 2015 (Tuesday to Saturday=2C 11am - 7pm).

* The exterior lights are on view for a full calendar year=2C and their ac=
tivation follows the gallery=E2=80=99s public opening dates and times.

Alongside Luci di via=2C Mat=C3=A8ria is proud to inaugurate a new chapter=
 of its Vitrine program=2C an ongoing initiative that transforms the galle=
ry=E2=80=99s street-facing window into a space for experimentation and dir=
ect engagement with the public.

Highlighted artist Miranda L=C3=B3pez Ortega (Guayaquil=2C Ecuador=2C 2002=
) makes way for a cycle of curated spotlights dedicated to budding artists=
=2C selected under the guidance of artist Gianni Politi. Conceived as a fi=
rst step into the professional context of a commercial gallery=2C the proj=
ect provides a platform for emerging voices to gain visibility while invit=
ing the public to encounter new artistic practices in a direct and accessi=
ble format. The initiative underscores Mat=C3=A8ria=E2=80=99s commitment t=
o supporting the next generation of artists and to cultivating opportuniti=
es where experimentation=2C dialogue=2C and accessibility intersect.

d by an ancient Mongolian shamanic healing ritual=2C <strong>Bekhbaatar En=
khtur</strong> transforms the entrance of the nineteenth-century Ayojzon c=
aravanserai into a symbolic material manifestation of the unseen feelings=
 of Bukhara today. In the <em>Shireg</em> ritual=2C molten pewter is poure=
d into water when a baby cries and cannot sleep=2C revealing the source of=
 hidden fears and allowing the child to rest peacefully. Enkhtur uses this=
 technique=2C which he experienced both as a child and now as a father=2C=
 and pours molten peter onto canvas=2C which is then embroidered by <em>su=
zani</em> maker <strong>Sanoat Abduraximova</strong> - in a collaborative=
 gesture of healing=2C a ritual intended to cleanse the ancient city of it=
s fears. In the artist's words: 'This act transforms invisible afflictions=
 into tangible forms - a symbolic purification and a conduit for healing.'=

=80=99s research is rooted in the study of the relationships that unfold w=
ithin the meshes of nature and their simulation=2C drawing from an imagina=
ry that favors the staging of rhetorical figures and layered allusions. Th=
e worlds of science and philosophy enter his work as tools for shaping tho=
ught. In addition=2C his experimentation with diverse materials=2C both or=
ganic and inorganic=2C leads the artist to incorporate methods of Eastern=
