Mat=C3=A8ria is delighted to unveil the outcomes of the 2024 IN/SU/LA resi=
dency=2C which brought together a group of twelve artists - among them rep=
resented artists Giuseppe De Mattia and Joachim Lenz - for an immersive st=
ay on the island of Ventotene last year.

IN/SU/LA has=2C for several years=2C brought artists to the historically s=
ignificant island of Ventotene=2C Italy =E2=80=93 a place deeply rooted in=
 the European ideas of community and solidarity. The 2024 edition focused=
 on exchange and artistic engagement with the history of Europe=2C the spi=
rit of the island=2C and questions of identity=2C belonging=2C and the fut=
ure.

The resulting works were exhibited in May at Galerie HOTO Berlin and a pre=
sentation focused on the postcards produced is showcased at Mat=C3=A8ria f=
rom July 3 until July 18=2C 2025.

The project is accompanied by a catalogue featuring texts by Verena Osthof=
f and Marc Wellmann=2C as well as photographs by Kseniya Apresian offering=
 deeper insights into the artistic processes and the island's history.

Alma Pearl is pleased to host Viaggi / Journeys=2C a joint exhibition in L=
ondon with the following Italian galleries: A+B Gallery (Brescia)=2C Mat=
=C3=A8ria (Rome)=2C Pinksummer (Genoa)=2C and z2o Sara Zanin (Rome).

There is an element of chance in the construction of this exhibition=2C in=
 the sense that each gallery decided which works to include without really=
 knowing whether there was even any common ground to bind works together.=
 Still=2C we wanted to do something chorally =E2=80=93 and=2C in doing so=
=2C we found unexpected resonances. As I write this text=2C I am thinking=
 about this process as a journey=E2=80=93of artworks=2C of people=2C of ne=
tworks spreading over the years suddenly all coming together. Movement=2C=
 whether literal or metaphorical=2C feels an important aspect of this expe=
rience.

There is of course the relational aspect of this project to consider=2C an=
 idea of a support structure spreading its wings far and wide but also loo=
king backwards as well as forwards. =E2=80=98Viaggi=E2=80=99=E2=80=93and i=
ts English translation=2C =E2=80=98journeys=E2=80=99=E2=80=93is a lulling=
 back and forth between two very different sounds. The first thrives on th=
e vocals yet doubles on the =E2=80=98g=E2=80=99 lingering like footsteps e=
choing in old piazzas. Journeys feel more like a stream=2C or a calming fl=
ow of thoughts and experiences=2C more internal than external. Such is at=
 times the experience of the traveller=2C alone or in a group=E2=80=93yet=
 always transformed by the encounter with the other.

Between July and September 1954=2C American photographer Berenice Abbott=
=2C accompanied by assistants and chauffeurs Damon and Sara Gadd=2C drove=
 back and forth along Route 1=2C the U.S. oldest road=2C stretching from F=
ort Kent=2C Maine=2C at the Canadian border in the north to the Florida Ke=
ys in the south. Initially rode as trails connecting the thirteen original=
 colonies and soon to be bypassed by a new interstate highway system=2C th=
e historical Route 1 offers=2C according to Abbott=2C =E2=80=9Ca realistic=
 picture of a true cross-section of American life.=E2=80=9D With the idea=
 of a picture book in mind=2C the photographer documented the diversity of=
 the communities=2C sceneries=2C and architectures encountered from Maine=
 to Florida. Abbott also highlighted the growing impact of the automobile=
 industry on the expansion of consumerism=2C the development of leisure ac=
tivities=2C and the rise of tourism=2C alluding to the increasing standard=
ization of the Mid-century American landscape. Despite the assembling of a=
 dummy and promotional
prospectus to convince editors=2C Abbott=E2=80=99s U.S. Route 1 photograph=
ic endeavor was never published=2C remaining relatively unknown to this da=
y.

Following in the tracks of Berenice Abbot and her two collaborators=2C bet=
ween 2016 and 2019=2C photographers Anna Fox and Karen Knorr drove from Ke=
y West to Atlanta=2C and from Washington=2C D.C. back to Atlanta. They lat=
er visited New York=2C Rhode Island=2C and Providence (2017)=2C Baltimore=
 and Philadelphia (2022)=2C and finally Maine before going back to Florida=
 (2023=E2=80=932024). With the ambition to shed light on Abbott=E2=80=99s=
 overlooked project=2C Fox and Knorr question the current significance of=
 Route 1=2C now a quieter roadway=2C documenting the cultural=2C social=2C=
 and environmental conditions explicit in today=E2=80=99s United States. U=
sing different formats and technologies=2C from iPhones to large view came=
ras=2C they photographed the small towns=2C communities=2C drugstores=2C c=
afes=2C motels=2C and diners along the way. Initiated during Donald Trump=
=E2=80=99s first presidential campaign=2C Fox and Knorr=E2=80=99s series u=
nderlines the consequences of the country=E2=80=99s most conservative poli=
tics for women=E2=80=99s and minorities=E2=80=99 rights=2C economically
underserved groups=2C the limitation of gun control=2C and the escalation=
 of police brutality. An homage to Abbott=E2=80=99s unfinished venture=2C=
 the artists=E2=80=99 vibrant investigation on Route 1 acutely prolongs an=
d actualizes the in-depth photographic study of =E2=80=9Ca slice of the Am=
erican scene.=E2=80=9D

A+B Gallery is glad to host Considering Boiler Venting=2C a group show fea=
turing works by Linda Carrara=2C Karen Knorr=2C Alwin Lay=2C Tiziano Marti=
ni=2C Andrea Mirabelli=2C Markus Saile=2C The Cool Couple.

The exhibition is conceived as a space for releasing tension=2C similar to=
 a safety valve=2C responding to the current acceleration of technology. T=
he works =E2=80=94 ranging from painting to photography=2C from objects to=
 digital elaborations =E2=80=94 reflect a widespread state of anxiety with=
out being overwhelmed by it. The tension remains constantly active but is=
 regulated by the artists=E2=80=99 skills=2C who achieve their poetic goal=
s without renouncing the use of openly technological tools.
The focus is not on the truth of images=2C but on the reactions triggered=
 by confusion=2C seduction=2C and disorientation. Visual=2C perceptual=2C=
 and ideological deception =E2=80=94 long regarded as a limitation or a da=
nger in art =E2=80=94 is here embraced as a method of understanding and as=
 a challenge=2C both ambiguous and ironic=2C to the technological context=
 we inhabit.

I must perform a gesture of=E2=80=A6

This unfinished sentence=2C on a folded white sheet of paper=2C a work by=
 Giuseppe Chiari=2C raises a question that runs through the entire exhibit=
ion: what are the gestures we feel compelled to perform? What marks do we=
 wish to leave=2C and what marks do we leave behind=2C unintentionally?

Gesto e Segno takes the form of a visual manifesto that explores the artis=
tic gesture and mark in various registers: physical=2C political=2C playfu=
l=2C poetic and aesthetic. In this dialectic=2C the exhibition explores th=
e psychological and dynamic expression of the body through actions that ar=
e at times emphatic=2C at other times minimal and part of the everyday=2C=
 and occasionally charged with a deep sense of political tension and revol=
t.

Despite their apparent semantic proximity=2C gesture and mark reveal funda=
mentally different natures and functions: gestures are spontaneous and unc=
oded acts=2C rooted in corporeality and emotion. They can accompany or eve=
n replace verbal language. Marks=2C by contrast=2C are mostly conventional=
 and codified elements with recognisable meanings within systems. Yet mark=
s=2C too=2C can appear ungrounded =E2=80=94 as a pure presence=2C as an ac=
t that simply is =E2=80=94 much like poetic language=2C which strives to s=
peak the unspeakable=2C to signify beyond signification itself.

In Giuseppe De Mattia=E2=80=99s performance Senza pane senza matita (TN: W=
ithout Bread Without Pencil)=2C the everyday gesture of eating becomes the=
 focus. The performance was born from a condition of impossibility: for fo=
urteen days=2C the artist found himself unable to draw. The need to find a=
n alternative tool arises from a chance encounter: a burnt slice of bread=
=2C immediately recognised as a possible substitute for charcoal. From tha=
t intuitive moment=2C De Mattia begins to draw with the bread itself=2C us=
ing it both as subject and instrument. The same slice is used to draw itse=
lf =E2=80=94 in an almost tautological act.

The burnt bread thus replaces the pencil=2C giving rise to a primordial an=
d necessary gesture that transfigures the ordinary into the extraordinary=
=2C transforming physical nourishment into aesthetic sustenance: once agai=
n=2C the dialectic between bodily necessity and the production of marks.

Made in Germany marks the beginning of De Mattia=E2=80=99s broader reflect=
ion on mark-makin and the reuse of archival materials. The link with writi=
ng instruments is central=2C as evidenced by his visits to Bologna=E2=80=
=99s historic Casa della Penna (TN: House of the Pen) =E2=80=94 a shop spe=
cialising in writing and drawing tools. There=2C the act of the shopkeeper=
 testing a pen =E2=80=93 getting it started=2C trying out its line =E2=80=
=93 becomes for De Mattia a moment of formal observation.

The artist collects the test sheets where those initial signs remain impre=
ssed =E2=80=94 technical=2C mechanical=2C almost calligraphic gestures tha=
t resemble little curls. De Mattia is particularly attached to these signs=
=2C which are initially unconscious: traces born from the intention to wri=
te=2C yet which become autonomous drawings. In this practice=2C the parado=
x of the orthographic sign is revealed =E2=80=94 one that originated in dr=
awing and=2C through a long evolution=2C has been reduced to a mere conven=
tional communicative function. De Mattia reactivates its visual dimension=
=2C reaffirming its poetic and plastic value.

Galleria de=E2=80=99 Foscherari is pleased to present Di traverso=2C a gro=
up exhibition curated by Enrico Camprini=2C opening on Friday=2C May 9. Th=
e show features works by Luca Bertolo (Milan=2C 1968)=2C Giuseppe De Matti=
a (Bari=2C 1980)=2C Enej Gala (Ljubljana=2C Slovenia=2C 1990)=2C Eva Maris=
aldi (Bologna=2C 1966)=2C and Liliana Moro (Milan=2C 1961).

Rather than tracing shared research lines or outlining a unifying thematic=
 horizon through which to direct the viewer's gaze=2C the exhibition bring=
s together works by artists of different generations to highlight a common=
 condition. What emerges is not a cohesive narrative=2C but an attitude=E2=
=80=94a certain stance toward artistic practice. This posture is reflected=
 in works that bear witness to it in autonomous=2C unpredictable=2C and mu=
table ways=2C opening up not fixed narratives but a field of speculative d=
iscourse and narrative suggestion.

This approach is encapsulated in the exhibition=E2=80=99s title=2C Di trav=
erso=2C a deceptively simple Italian expression whose everyday use is rich=

 as well as the path of someone who=2C whether by temperament or necessity=
=2C chooses an alternative route=E2=80=94with the steady lightness of a li=
mping step.

At the heart of the project is this sense of ambiguity=2C a deliberate und=
ercurrent of doubt and ambivalence that runs through the works on view. Of=
ten object-based=2C the pieces engage the viewer as a potential accomplice=
=E2=80=94but also as a foil or provocateur; as both initiator of unexpecte=
d dynamics and witness to apparent contradictions. In this way=2C the exhi=
bition frames the audience within a scenario of declared and ongoing insta=
bility.

Di traverso arises from an oblique and sideways gaze=E2=80=94a refusal to=
 describe or define reality through fixed or monolithic interpretations. I=
t is a gaze that underpins the heterodox=2C multidisciplinary practices of=
 a generation in which Marisaldi and Moro stand as key figures. It also an=
imates the work of Gala and Bertolo=2C who renegotiate the roles of sculpt=
ure and painting through a functionality that is suggested=2C but never fu=
lly resolved. In De Mattia=E2=80=99s case=2C it manifests as a kind of ben=
evolent appropriation=E2=80=94stealing stories and narrative threads to re=
vive and reimagine.

 construction of this exhibition=2C in the sense that each gallery decided=
 which works to include without really knowing whether there was even any=
 common ground to bind works together. Still=2C we wanted to do something=
 chorally =E2=80=93 and=2C in doing so=2C we found unexpected resonances.=
 As I write this text=2C I am thinking about this process as a journey=E2=
=80=93of artworks=2C of people=2C of networks spreading over the years sud=
denly all coming together. Movement=2C whether literal or metaphorical=2C=
 feels an important aspect of this&nbsp;experience.<br>
&nbsp;<br>
There is of course the relational aspect of this project to consider=2C an=
 idea of a support structure spreading its wings far and wide but also loo=
king backwards as well as forwards. =E2=80=98Viaggi=E2=80=99=E2=80=93and i=
ts English translation=2C =E2=80=98journeys=E2=80=99=E2=80=93is a lulling=
 back and forth between two very different sounds. The first thrives on th=
e vocals yet doubles on the =E2=80=98g=E2=80=99 lingering like footsteps e=
choing in old piazzas. Journeys feel more like a stream=2C or a calming fl=
ow of thoughts and experiences=2C more internal than external.&nbsp;Such i=
s at times the experience of the traveller=2C alone or in a group=E2=80=93=
yet always&nbsp;transformed by the encounter with the other.</span></span>=

 photographer Berenice Abbott=2C accompanied by assistants and chauffeurs=
 Damon and Sara Gadd=2C drove back and forth along Route&nbsp;1=2C the U.S=
=2E oldest road=2C stretching from Fort Kent=2C Maine=2C at the Canadian bor=
der in the north to the Florida Keys in the south. Initially rode as trail=
s connecting the thirteen original colonies and soon to be bypassed by a n=
ew interstate highway system=2C the historical Route 1 offers=2C according=
 to Abbott=2C =E2=80=9Ca realistic picture of a true cross-section of Amer=
ican life.=E2=80=9D With the idea of a picture book in mind=2C the photogr=
apher documented the diversity of the communities=2C sceneries=2C and arch=
itectures encountered from Maine to Florida. Abbott also highlighted the g=
rowing impact of the automobile industry on the expansion of consumerism=
=2C the development of leisure activities=2C and the rise of tourism=2C al=
luding to the increasing standardization of the Mid-century American lands=
cape. Despite the assembling of a dummy and promotional prospectus to conv=
ince editors=2C Abbott=E2=80=99s U.S. Route 1 photographic endeavor was ne=
ver published=2C remaining relatively unknown to this day.<br>

Following in the tracks of Berenice Abbot and her two collaborators=2C bet=
ween 2016 and 2019=2C photographers Anna Fox and Karen Knorr drove from Ke=
y West to Atlanta=2C and from Washington=2C D.C. back to Atlanta. They lat=
er visited New York=2C Rhode Island=2C and Providence (2017)=2C Baltimore=
 and Philadelphia (2022)=2C and finally Maine before going back to Florida=
 (2023=E2=80=932024). With the ambition to shed light on Abbott=E2=80=99s=
 overlooked project=2C Fox and Knorr question the current significance of=
 Route 1=2C now a quieter roadway=2C documenting the cultural=2C social=2C=
 and environmental conditions explicit in today=E2=80=99s United States. U=
sing different formats and technologies=2C from iPhones to large view came=
ras=2C they photographed the small towns=2C communities=2C drugstores=2C c=
afes=2C motels=2C and diners along the way. Initiated during Donald Trump=
=E2=80=99s first presidential campaign=2C Fox and Knorr=E2=80=99s series u=
nderlines the consequences of the country=E2=80=99s most conservative poli=
tics for women=E2=80=99s and minorities=E2=80=99 rights=2C economically un=

ndition of impossibility: for fourteen days=2C the artist found himself un=
able to draw. The need to find an alternative tool arises from a chance en=
counter: a burnt slice of bread=2C immediately recognised as a possible su=
bstitute for charcoal. From that intuitive moment=2C De Mattia begins to d=
raw with the bread itself=2C using it both as subject and instrument. The=
 same slice is used to draw itself =E2=80=94 in an almost tautological act=
=2E</span></span></span></p>

 Pen) =E2=80=94 a shop specialising in writing and drawing tools. There=2C=
 the act of the shopkeeper testing a pen =E2=80=93 getting it started=2C t=
rying out its line =E2=80=93 becomes for De Mattia a moment of formal obse=
rvation.</span></span></span></p>

h are initially unconscious: traces born from the intention to write=2C ye=
t which become autonomous drawings. In this practice=2C the paradox of the=
 orthographic sign is revealed =E2=80=94 one that originated in drawing an=
d=2C through a long evolution=2C has been reduced to a mere conventional c=
ommunicative function. De Mattia reactivates its visual dimension=2C reaff=
irming its poetic and plastic value.</span></span></span><br>
